I don't think your menus have been site has been set-up 100% correctly.

If I change the language to English from the French menu item 'Les Tableaux' - it should take me to 'Paintings' in the English menu. It doe not work like that, it just lands me on the homepage.

Are you using menu item associations ?

Is each menu item associated with the same one of the other language?

Yeah, it could be association issue. I am not sure which language is default language of your site?

The logo is currently set to: http://www.johnbeckley.com/. The default language is french so anytime you access your site: http://www.johnbeckley.com/. it will be default menu item of French - Home page. In this case, the Home menu item of French language is default page of your site so the logo is linked to the page.

For the search issue, I think it is not Joomla search module, could be the search module of the third party extension. You may need to ask for help from the extension provider. If you want me to have closer check, please pm me your site admin account.
